Manitoba Master Gardener Program

The first courses for the Manitoba Master Gardener Program has begun at Assiniboine Community College.  Full details are posted here.

Trees for Tomorrow

In 2017, two Scotch pine trees were planted.

In 2009, the SAGC celebrated its 10th anniversary and commemorated the milestone by starting the program Trees for Tomorrow.  This program is a commitment by the SAGC to plant one tree in the community every year for the next ten years.  The first year saw the Club plant a Silver Maple at K.R. Barkman Park in Steinbach.  From 2010-13, one pine was planted each year near the intersection of PTH 52 and Loewen Boulevard.

There were two trees planted in 2014 (on the green space by PTH 52 W and Loewen Blvd).  The trees are Norlin Little Leaf Linden, or Tilia Cordata ‘Ronald’.  They are expected to reach 50 ft. at maturity, the crown broad and pyramidal and will have a golden fall colour.  Check them out next time you are in that area.

The SAGC has done it again!  Our float won another award this year… ‘Judge’s Choice’, the highest honour awarded in the parade!  A  huge thank you to Lenora Kehler for her tremendous artistry and hard work in putting together a first class float!  Thank you also to those who supported the project, sat on the float, and cheered us along the way!

Community Gardens in Steinbach
Ernie Klassen is the organizer and manager of a new initiative to create a community garden in the City of Steinbach.  The City recognizes the importance and great potential here, and is sponsoring the land for the plots, fresh soil, compost, mulch, water, and the labour and machinery to prepare for this important project.  The garden club is pleased to offer our support by spreading the word and helping to promote this new project.
These garden plots will be offered to anyone for a small fee, and Ernie’s vision is for it to be used by seniors living in apartments, and perhaps new immigrants also, although anyone else can rent a plot.

Eden East Donation
Each year the SAGC chooses to donate to a worthy cause. For 2010 the club decided to make a donation to Eden East on behalf of Dr. P.F. Peters, a founding member of the Garden Club. Eden East provides affordable housing for those with mental and social needs in the community. Dr. Peters was a major leader in this development. The donation will go towards landscaping costs at Eden East in Steinbach.

Throughout the year there are many garden-related events going on in the community.  We will happily showcase as many as possible.  Feel free to contact us with your events.
